This time around, I just want to remind you all of some of the bands that have inspired Cephalochromoscope in the first place. Why? Because the last DxAx-centered post seems to have been back around... December, 2008. Damn! So Cephalochromoscope is actually pretty old. We've never really noted the blog's birthday or anything of the sort; I just checked and the first post fell on April the 19th, 2008, which means that, in less than a month's time, the blog will be, uh, four years old. Anyhow, that first post was all but interesting;…
So hey, I guess I could've, maybe even should've written this one much earlier. Long story short - Cephalochromoscope ain't dead. But my computer's been in a coma for a while now - as has Orfee's scanner - and I've been quite busy with whatever I've been busy with. Some of the machines are finally resurrecting, though, so new posts are to be expected soon. And - for all those who sent me emails - replies to you, too. That's about it, really. ;) .karlo
I know I'm late. Can't travel back in time, anyhow. If I had to, I'd say that 2010 took the cake in the sludge / slower department in general; bands like Thou, Harvey Milk, Cough, The Body, the new, improved version of Bastard Noise, and much, much more (and sure, I've missed some potentially ace / probably metal ones, e.g. the new Immolation, but I don't really care to hear about it unless it's grind). Not to worry, though, 'cause I've suffered through a great lot of blastbeats anyhow. Deliberately ignoring a l…
HASTE 1.1 /shiny grind - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [downright first class stuff] Kill The Client - Set For Extinction Not as abrasive, intense, or catchy as Cleptocracy, but Kill The Client is certainly still among the top of grindcore today, so now's the time to decide whether they want to become another Phobia or broaden their area of destruction. Slow down, add some melody, etc.? Fuck no. And stop sludging it up. I'm just looking at bands like Noisear and GridLink trying to become the blastbeat. Bryan Fajardo…
HASTE 1.2 /emo - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [to be honest, I’m not talking about the hairstyle] Loma Prieta - Life/Less The Life/Less 12" is a thrashin’ interpretation of screamo, preferring to crush, rather than take part in the bland, modern post-rock gimmick that many such bands settled into. But why are people calling this stuff chaotic as if bands like Orchid or Usurp Synapse never even existed. Sure, there are certainly many great bands today, but I’ve still not heard one able of holding a candle to …
SLOW DOWN AND DIE /winning a sludge contest is like - - - - - - - - - - - - - [making funny faces to adults / the ass- holes might not appreciate your work] Thou - Summit [posted] Madly prolific, inimitable, apocalyptically hopeful Louisiana sludge. Summit may not be as heavily catchy as Tyrant, but I'd rather focus on how awesome it still is. Coupled with the lyrics, Thou's sludge might sound like ruby red lava creeping down bleak NOLA streets, cleansing the city of cop, dope, and man all-together; crystal clear progressions erupt in…
Jyb's on board the blog now! I'm fairly certain that most of the regulars here know who I'm talking about, 'cause all the releases he contributed kicked fairly huge amounts of ass, and especially, ESPECIALLY, the first one . He's from France, suggesting that the French-speaking part of the staff is trying to take over Cephalochromoscope, or something of the sort. Naturally, Jyb is also a Discordance Axis fanboy and a SHMUP lover, but I doubt that anyone thought differently. That said, he also takes part in a few (predominan…
Our blog had twelve less posts in 2009 than in 2008, notwithstanding the larger amount of time / months / days (first post: 4/19/08 ). I'm nowhere near as active as I was for reasons of my own, but what can I say - all hail Orfee! Thanks for all the awesome blues and fastcore, man. :) As for me - my future blog-plans include many post regarding Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and whatever other grind scene gets caught up in-between. About past posts - I'm aware that many links are offline, so if you'd like us to reupload just leave…
CEPHALOCHROMOGRIND 1. These irresistibly lovable four releases / five bands are my grind-favorites as they certainly hold some of that "Tetsuooo! Kanedaaaaaaa!" magic. Wormrot - Abuse Wormrot fucking ate 2009 in grind. Look for it here . Parlamentarisk Sodomi - De Anarkistiske An(n)aler Parlamentarisk Sodomi is the new 324! Scroll down for the rest. Attack of the Mad Axeman - Scumdogs of the Forest Attack of the Mad Axeman scared all the birds and bunnies out of the forest with slick death-grind chops of a kind that no one pursue…
Not grind. Not powerviolence. Still here. JESUS-HATING METAL Altar of Plagues - White Tomb Altar of Plagues brought a hellstorm of grim & kvlt black metal enthusiast on themselves with a very modern-sounding (meaning: add the post- prefix) way of atmosphere combustion. After the intro straight off Two Hunters, we get the usual blastbeatery coupled with long post-metal reminiscing easy rides. White Tomb definitely isn't for the fan of classic black metal, and it isn't even necessarily thriving with originality; genre-wise, it sound…
The scene: an untidy bedroom, full of musical instruments and recording gear. An enormous LCD monitor dominates a black desk by the window. Sitting at the desk, typing a nonsensical comment about Sony on UKResistance is a shaven-headed chap in amusingly large flared trousers and an Arcade Fire hoodie. The camera settles in the middle of the room as the chap turns, looks surprised, and begins to speak. LORD DAVYDD GRIMM: Oh, hallo, I didn't notice you there! I was busy giggling like an idiot at a picture of a bootleg Chinese Sonic the Hedge…
So how was 2008? T'was good I guess. Especially musically. After centuries of only playing video games and watching anime, Jon Chang decided to make me a happy man once again, two times in one year. Yes, Chang and the rest of his pantheon are the gods of grind, an unstoppable force continually deconstructing all philosophical bullshitting about music and its respective purpose into a perfectly clear, primal purpose = SPEED . So... album of the year? Fuck the year. It transcends time. Our gang of three aside, here's the best post of t…
